The Good, The Bad & The Solutions
May 20, 2009 on 5:33 pm | In Competition/Convention, Dance Studio, Danceregister, Music, Tap dance, judging | No CommentsIt’s been a while and I decided to stop work on everything I am doing at the moment to shoot out a quick post. Continuing on with music, I thought it would be fun to list
-
My current favorite people to choreograph to:
-
- Jason Mraz
- Jason Yudoff
- Animal Liberation Orchestra
- Mean ‘ol Lion
- Louie Prima
-
Random Songs to retire from Competition:
-
- Every version of “These Boots are Made for Walking”
- Both “new” Elvis Songs “Rubber Neck ‘n” and “Little Bit More” as well as “Blue Suede Shoes” and “Jail House Rock”
- Every version of “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” along with poorly cut Versions of “Footloose”
- “Diamonds”
- and finally Solos featuring the Song “I Just Can’t do it Alone” from Chicago
-
Top three things someone should have told you about Competition
-
- In my 10+ years experience, 99% of the time “Do Overs”, unless requested by the judges, will hurt your score rather than help it. I have only seen it help a performer once in 12 years.
- Quick Changes are part of becoming a proper, responsible performer. It is also crucial if you ever want to become a professional with any type of entertainment career. Use Quick Changes as a positive learning experience that is an extension of the performers dance education, not as a negative, looming moment, which is pre-judged as difficult and panic stricken. EX. Wear costumes under each other, or try a natural color bodice to make changes easier with less sweat and skin causing friction with the fabric.
- Acoustics are LOUDER than you think and Wings SHORTER than you may realize. It is tacky, rude and unprofessional to be heard or seen when waiting on the side of stage to perform. I know may dancers do not even know they are seen or heard because A) Were never told it is rude or corrected in the past or B) Didn’t know two simple facts that would help them both understand and remember this better. One – A stage is designed to help project sound, because of this, it is possible to hear, even a whisper, when you are back stage. Two- Being seen in the Wings is a Major Party Foul! It immediately pulls focus away from the performer who is currently on stage. The rule when waiting back stage is very simple – If you can seen anyone in the audience, Then they can see you!
Hope these pointers and suggestions help you all. Take notice I gave you songs to eliminate, but some new artists to replace them with. I also provided both the problem as well as the solutions for what was on my mind when performing or competing. You can apply these things to recital as well.
Finally, I would like to announce two things:
-
- Danceregister now has a widget you can add to any website that you may “cut & paste” code. EX. facebook, myspace, blogs. (grab the widget below)
- Dance4teachers DVDs Vol. 2.0.9 are completed. Our “robot” needed to go in for service. Upon it’s return, DVDs will be burned and mailed to subscribers immediately.

A.
